And I said why? And the parents are now screaming at the teacher. We soccerized it, and we took it to a completely different level. So every kid comes in with a personal narrative that protects them from pain and accountability. And even in their review of where they stand in self-discipline, competitive fire, self-belief, love of the ball, love of playing the game, love of watching the game, grit and coachability, with basically 2 exceptionswell, actually, with just 1 exceptionevery one of their grades is their own, so when they average it out they are doing their own evaluation. One is that I am going to improve by trying to beat everyone to death and every single minute of every single practice, but also the other kids will benefit from that because in order to deal with me, they have to raise their competitive level as well. One of the toughest things with women is to get them to lead verbally, because what every woman in the room understands, as soon as a woman leader opens her mouth everyones going to think shes a bitch. Or if you have a collection of small societies with the six people youre leading and your restaurant group its cookie cutter where yeah, we all do this. And so what is critical is, you know, who we end up recruiting. Anson: Well, because of my experience. And Im looking at this thinking, you know, well this is all Ive done my whole life. Because obviously almost every kid we recruit on scholarship has the dream of playing professionally, so almost every one of our scholarship kids does sign a professional contract. So heres what every freshman has to memorize before they get here to follow the principle that we dont want. I have tried so many different ways to develop leaders. Anson: They all left the office with their tails firmly between their legs and they got to work. You get to know them, you get to find out how to lead them and you have to embrace the fact they are different. You want to sign a pro contract. And we would give speeches and then Jack Welch, the famous CEO of General Electric, would get up there on a stage and sit in a comfortable chair like Im doing now. So please dont think in firing them youre not doing them a positive service. And so almost everything we present is done in ranking form. Every so often, I pull out his 12 Core Values. So Anson, you are quite an accomplished man and Im sure have lots of great insights to share with us. Well all be completely honest. I remember how excited everyone was, and how impressed we all were when Coach Dorrance shared his 12 Core Values. And then we also have them evaluate every teammate on whether or not they were living each core value, and we did it on a 4 point scale, sort of like a GPA, so 4 is obviously a 4.0, its an A average, so 4 is an extraordinary example of this core value. Menu. Coach Dorrance: Well, I think what youre trying to do within the context of what youre talking about in the work world, but this applies in our stuff incredibly. Yes. So who am I in this player conference? And my job is to get them to the truth because where do I want them to go? The second most important thing is the competitive cauldron, and the final thing is my other function is to take everyones personal narrative to the truth. Anyway, so Jack is up there, hes answering all these questions, and he is great. Now Ive had leaders and Ive given them opportunities to lead. The first slide had the year 1969 on it. It lists and explains the core values that have shaped the culture and behavior of Anson Dorrances soccer teams over the years. And so now what theyve realized, you know what, it wasnt the coach, it was me, and so their perspective changes. And he would say it calmly and, you know, with warmth. So heres the advantage of this. And so I really appreciated that. Anson: Well, its hit or miss, I mean. But Im going to, you know, Im going to conform to the B.S. Being best on my team is good enough for where you want to go. My job is to get them to the truth as fast as possible. He has one of the most successful coaching records in the history of athletics. And here they are. Its basically about accountability. When I went to Columbia, we had just hired a Russian exile poet by the name of Joseph Brodsky. He would calmly nod and make it seem like he was agreeing with the person, and then in a very calm and mature voice just say well, your moral imperative is not this substandard employee, your moral imperative is that extraordinary, you know, widow thats trying to live on basically her investment in your company. Now theres only one of those things that I wont touch, that whatever score they give themselves I will not argue with them, well just put it down as theyve told me. The three V three scrimmages are recorded. Anson: Thats correct. Thats awesome. One thing I loved about what Dean Smith did, though, our legendary former basketball coach who was the coach for Michael Jordan, is when back in the days when people didnt commit early, whenever he took an in house visit he would study how the kid treated his parents. Theres a call right now towards authoritarianism. So I pulled her aside and I said, you know, so-and-so, Im sorry, but shut up. It lists and explains the core values that have shaped the culture and behavior of Anson Dorrance's soccer teams over the years. So I think, yeah, business can save the world. If you love those you teach, if you love those to coach, if you love those you lead, theyre going to feel it. Because I rode this kid, I knew what her potential was and if she has this extraordinary potential now, Anson Im the best on the team at this, and youre not happy. So this is where were trying to drive them. To be honest, he spoke for an hour. They do not want to excel. I am never going to make this travel roster unless I change. And now all of a sudden theyre going to become responsible for everything. Here is the first principle. But she said basically between your criticism, I could feel your love. You can just make. And all of a sudden, in a New York Times magazine years ago, there was a woman that was writing about her experiences studying Russian literature at Columbia. I could feel the love. And my ego after that conversation or soaring like a hawk, she could feel my love. Now is the period to escape the protection of loving parents that dont want you to get hurt. You have 4 years to get ready for the chaos at the university. Richard Whisnant recently shared an interestingdocument on our Blackboard strategic planning site that provides at least part of the answer. And of course these are, you know, very successful CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, and their top managerial staff, and every one of them has paid like, you know, $20,000 to be in the room, and of course theyre righteously indignant with this incredibly successful man telling them to fall on the bottom 10% of their workforce. How do you make sure that these core values are living and breathing in your organization and dont just exist on a piece of paper? Its not gonna work. So theres a line we draw. And so often time its not just the training environment thats critical for us, its how we can get into, again, the mindset of the players to get them to change a certain mindset or a narrative thats protecting them from getting to their potential. And honestly, I knew that what you had to do with them, like your culture, wants to get people to do extraordinary things, to live the culture. Im trying to drive every one of my kids to their potential. We are the most elite students in the United States in this area and now hes assigning us work to do that elementary school students are done in the United States. In fact the Lady Tar Heels have won 22 of the 36 NCAA soccer championships. By this time the head manager has ranked every player in practice from one to 15, ranked. The United States has won four world championships and four gold medals. I love the immediacy of the feedback, and all of a sudden we stole that stuff. He was the first coach in NCAA history to win 20 championships coaching a single sport. And Im not allowed to touch self-belief. Ill give you my favorite example. Anson Dorrance s 12 Core Values for Team Success The Grappling Discourse His 12 core values have been used and studied by athletes and teams from around the world. But I think its an amazing thing to hear you talk about how strong your core values are, and the quality of character of your players. And Ill be honest with you, nothing seemed to work and all of a sudden I am reading this thing out of the New York Times magazine. We want to be educated the way a Columbia student should be educated. He knows a thing or two about winning. What I consider most valuable about objective review is theres no subjectivity. There was nothing inspiring about them, and I was thinking gosh, none of this stuff works. Right now were talking about future of work. And so I want to be able to write them a brilliant recommendation into any part of their future. Coach Dorrances teams have won 22 NCAA national titles and 20 of 27 ACC championships. Melissa: Thats really interesting. And then basically getting their personal narrative to the truth and my opinion, those are the three most critical things about what my responsibility here is for these wonderful kids I get to train. You cared about me and you still care about me. No. We follow the philosophy that steel sharpens steel. And what she talked about was when I shared with her basically everyone in the rooms opinion of her and how she felt she had to change, and then basically she did. They want to be considered excellent for desiring to be held exempt from all accountability. Now thats typical of the Millennials. They dont want to be accountable. Everything has a different quality. So tell us, how do you convince some woman to transfer or to quit the team? So those five, Ive done those for a while in the last five, I assume were doing these sprints until the end of reported time. But whats shocking to us is how often extraordinary talent never gets on the field. When you fire these people, they are going to hate you for the rest of their lives, but they dont want to work for you. You just want to be the best on this team. And this is one of the worlds great universities. Did we tweak their leadership a little bit and maybe help them to a small degree? So what we did is we took our 12 core values and we assigned a motivational quote attached to each one, and we ask every one of our players to memorize all of these motivational quotes attached to each core value. And weve made all kinds of mistakes on this because originally we would actually share where they ranked among the 30 players in character, and that, you know, I didnt think ended up being very positive. If they think theyre Gods gift to the game, I will never try to deconstruct that. Melissa: Oh, I love that. Lauren Constable, VP of Operations, This thing is amazing. Every senior gets to have a parting speech and basically almost like an advice to all the kids that are left in the program on, you know, what they should do to become extraordinary. Anson: And I said you know what, I agree with you. $200 per post at $10/CPM. The program is offered in two formats: on-campus and online. And the only one theyre not allowed to touch is coachability. But if we started having all of these, you know, kids take the, you know, Angela Duckworth grit test or, you know, some sort of, you know, psychological profile or take my core value test, wed lose them, and the word would get out that, you know, thats how were evaluating them, and it would kill us. But my HR person is also fantastic and plays a huge role in it, so I agree with your concepts. I mean, I thought I could play for anyone. Each year the players grade themselves and their teammates on the extent to which they embody the core values. She said because Anson, I have to change. One of the most destructive things in athletics are the whiners. Yes, but not through any sort of authoritarianism. So if you were to read "In Search of Excellence: Lessons from America's Best Run Companies" (by Tom Peters et. And youll appreciate this because youre a woman. Maybe you can let us in on the secret. Coach Anson establishes a culture of constant improvement with his athletes and staff by being 100% honest with us. So I really, really appreciate it. I just want to answer. [Laughs.]. In my experience its a crock. If its the two bigs against two other bigs, theyre having a little two V two competition underneath the basket. Emulating the core values of the Carolina Womens Soccer Team is a noble goal, indeed, and I strongly advocate them! One is the cauldron. So now she and I can sit on the same side of the desk, put the numbers up there on the screen and say you know what, I think youre better than this. And so for me its all about trying to figure out a way to sort out their character before you hire them. I didnt need an hour. Melissa: Hi. Anson: And you speak to a parent, you know, theyre doing the same thing. Melissa: Bye-bye. Is that true? And let me tell you something. Any advice to share on that front? And my last question, and this is a fun question that we actually ask all of our new hires when they start at Eagle Hill, is if you could have 1 superpower, what would it be and why? And so I go into the session, Im invited there with every one of my staff members. So we stole this idea, we soccer-ized it, we took it to a new level. So I have also read that you sit down with your players once a year to kind of do an overall player evaluation. Anson: Well, they are good. So now what we share is we share the top 4, we share their names and their ranks and everything, and then we share a one line statement not of where this girl ranks, but of where she is in the core values. Because theyve been filled with absolute garbage from their parents and often from their youth coaches. So its almost like a gender pressure against leadership. And one of the things Ive been thinking about a lot lately is, is a leader made or is a leader born? Anson Dorrance is an American soccer coach. Well, thank you so much for taking time today. The three-point shooting is recorded. Reaching the National Championship 24 times, his winning percentage against the best teams in the country is well over 90%. So, you know, we had this insipid, you know, core value about working hard, but theres nothing motivational about this core value of working hard because that inspires no one. The professor had some literature that I found so powerful that I now use it with my team. In the old days, because I love reading business books, Ive read all the business books of best sellers and Ive read them all. Ive had so many train wreck failures in leadership I dont know, I could write a book on failing to develop leaders.
